Homeschooling Your Older Child

 Homeschooling Your Older Child

So what happens when your sweet little boy or girl suddenly turns into a *gasp* teenager?  Hormones are running rampant and you can’t imagine where this attitude is coming from?  Don’t panic!  Stay calm, they can smell your fear.  Really, it’s just the natural order of things.   Biologically, this child is hard wired to push the boundaries of his little world.  You are basically the only authority he answers to directly and it’s your job to show him how the world works.  Of course that’s every parent’s job, but with homeschooling families, the responsibility lies solely with you.  (As does every other responsibility – but we like it that way, don’t we?)

After a few really upsetting events where my authority was challenged and I was spoken to in a very rude manner (I’m really understating the situation here), I came up with a few ideas that seem to be helping us.  I thought I’d share them here in the spirit that a burden shared is a burden halved (or whatever that phrase is).

  • Always maintain your authority, you’re his parent – not his friend
  • Establish your boundaries and then maintain them.
  • Keep them busy – bored children=trouble seeking children
  • Give them some wiggle room; they need to be in charge of something
  • Even at this age, they still want to hang out with you. Do something fun
  • Let them talk  Even when you don’t have the time, or you’re exhausted, or you just     can’t be pulled in one more direction.  Let them talk, you might be surprised at how entertaining they can be.
  • Know that they’re mature enough to handle the fact that Mom is a person too and as such has the right to a quiet evening, or to watch a movie alone, or to have a telephone conversation in private.  They can handle it, really.

This can be a very trying time for a parent, but it can also be extremely rewarding to see the child that you’ve nurtured, turning into a respectful, articulate, caring young man or woman.  Hang on, we’ll get there.

More Gadgety Goodness

So the other day, out of the blue, I decided that I really needed to convert my old home movies from VHS to DVD. I was really worried about the tapes and how long they’re really going to hold up. I don’t even let anyone watch them anymore for fear that they’ll break. Isn’t that ridiculous? So anyway… I go over to my church, I mean Bestbuy and look at the combo DVDRs. They have a few open box specials and one of them is a Sony RDR VXD555 (they keep moving the link for this- I have no choice but to delink, sorry) for $189.00 – there’s no remote, but I figure I can program the universal to operate this machine. Wrong! Don’t buy one without the remote, you can’t access the menus without it. Duh.
So, I unplug it and bring it back to the store. They cheerfully give me a refund and that’s that.
On my way out, I can’t help but go look at the combo recorders again to decide which one I want to plunk down $300 for. Again, I look at the open box items and there’s another VXD555 with the remote for.. ready? $159!!! (if this were 10 years ago, I would have so put that in a blink tag!)
So, one could, in fact, say that Bestbuy paid me $30. Life is good.
Took it home, hooked it up and it works like a charm.
Copied some home videos and of course wanted to immediately transfer them to the mac so that I could mess with them. What? You can’t transfer DVD to imovie? So, I did a little research (how did we ever live without google?) and found a software program that will convert them for $25!
This is so much fun I can’t stand it. The only problem is that now I need to go buy ANOTHER external hard drive for my movie editing. Movie files are insanely huge.
Have I mentioned that I really love technology?

I Tunes U

Once upon a time, there weren’t many choices for homeshooling families.  That is no longer the case.  We have so many options, it’s really unbelievable.  From Apple:
“As a teacher, you’re always on the lookout for great educational resources. And you’ll find a rich supply of content on iTunes U. Take, for example, the free digital library available at teachers’ domain. Brought to you by WGBH, Boston’s award-winning PBS station, teachers’ domain offers downloadable videos and educator guides. Ranging from A Night in the Coral Reef to Homo Sapiens versus Neanderthals to Mitochondrial Flyover, they offer an invaluable addition to your science curriculum. And they’re just a tiny portion of the content waiting for you on iTunes U. (The “Read more” link will open Itunes for you.)

Yay Schooling at home!
