When we first started homeschooling five years ago, we got some less than polite reactions from people who wondered why my children weren’t in school. It’s gotten much better in the last five years, but in the past week I’ve had two different instances where people were not only less than polite, they were downright rude. I’m so surprised when people react like that, as it would never occur to me to vocalize judgements about people that I barely knew. One person told me that homeschooling wasn’t allowing my children to participate “in the real world”, another actually told me I was crazy. Both of these people were being paid to perform a service for me. One a clerk in a favorite store, the other a health care professional. As I started to “state the case” for homeschooling, I realized that I was just too tired and way past caring what these obviously ignorant, closed minded people thought, said, or felt. I could easily have taken the low road and made disparaging remarks about their commitment to “government schools”, and raising a nation of sheep, but I didn’t do that either. Truth be told, I don’t really believe that, but I was mad, k?
The fact is, we live in America and as such we all have the right to choose the best options for our family. If you want to send your child to public or private school, you have absolutely every right to do that and I’m sure that you wouldn’t expect me to make comments about it. By the same token I don’t expect to have comments made about my decision. I don’t mind curious questions. As a matter of fact I love to talk about what we do and why, but really is everyone so convinced that theirs is the only way that there’s no room for diversity? I sincerely hope that’s not the case. There are enough people on this planet hating each other for ridiculous reasons, can’t we as parents give each other the room to grow in the way that is right for our own families?
