Every couple of field trips, I really like to do something to give back to this community that we love so much. In that spirit, we went with another homeschool family to take a tour of the Humane Society of Marion County, a no kill shelter, which has recently moved into a brand new facility. This shelter has spacious kennels for the dogs, a brand new screened area for cats, dog runs and yards big enough to give everyone the exercise they need and a very caring staff. The two staff members who showed us around were really terrific, answering all of our questions and telling us a little bit about each of the dogs along the way.
This is Chocolate, an adorable poodle who was just waiting for her new family to come pick her up!
And this is Joy, a sweet, adorable mixed breed who has the most beautiful face! (I called the next day hoping to bring her home to my house, but they informed me that she doesn’t do well with other dogs and I have two, so that was out. Someone was there looking at her though when I called, so maybe they fell in love with her and she’s already in her new home.)
As we always try to do, we had a donation to drop off. In a time when the economy is rough and people are finding it hard to make ends meet, charitable organizations suffer. When families are struggling to keep their own needs met, often the first expense to be cut is charitable giving. I hope to instill in my children the idea that charity is important, no matter what. Maybe we can’t afford to give like we used to, but I think the giving is more important when it’s not as easy.
There are so many people and organizations making a difference in this world, but they all need help, we all need help. I really believe that we’re at our best when we’re helping someone else. The added benefit is that it really feels good to do good.
If you’re thinking about getting a pet for your family, please consider your local, no kill, shelter. I have two dogs and a cat and they’re all rescues. Rescue pets rock. It’s not very expensive and your spay or neuter is included in the fee.
After the field trip we found a park nearby and had lunch, playtime and good conversation with good friends.
It was a good day.
