Home is Where the Heart Is

There’s a contest going on at Twitter Moms, and it struck a chord with me as I’ve been thinking a lot about this topic.

Home.

That’s a loaded word, isn’t it?  Going ‘Home’ for the holidays is a very popular angst ridden topic in pop culture. I’m at an age though, where home no longer means getting on a plane and visiting relatives, home is where I am.  It’s been a long road, but to me, home is my husband and children.  It doesn’t matter much which house we live in, on what street, or even what town.  If we had to, we could move anywhere in the world that there was an interesting opportunity for us. It really would have to be a very interesting, lucrative opportunity however, for us to consider leaving our current city, Ocala as we have somehow, managed to carve out a life for ourselves with some great friends in this town.

We don’t own a home, but we’ve been very lucky to rent quite a few interesting places.  They haven’t always been the smartest thing we could have rented, but we’ve  had great fun and learned quite a bit along the way.  We almost bought a couple of times, but just never got to closing and while I do appreciate the benefits of homeownership, there are a lot of benefits to renting as well.

Last year, we had the opportunity to rent a spectacular house, a real showstopper, a house that I thought was going to be the best place I ever lived.  It’s on 5 gated acres, away from the road, with absolute privacy, 4000 square feet, a huge pool, decks all around the second story, three fireplaces, ginormous walk in closet, hardwood floors, etc., etc., etc.  You know what?  This house feels the least like home of all of our rentals.  Everything I thought I wanted?  Turns out I don’t.  All the space?  I feel like the kids are too far away.  The hardwood floors?  Always look dirty.  5 acres?  Pain in the neck.  Pool?  Well, the pool’s still fabulous.

So now our lease is up and we’re not renewing.  We’re downsizing.  I’m not sorry that we rented this house, as a matter of fact, I’m very glad that we did.  I learned a lot about myself and what I really, authentically want from our home.  I want a house big enough for us to live comfortably, but small enough that we can easily reach out to each other, a house that’s conducive to gathering in a common area.  I want a kitchen that isn’t far from the action in the rest of the house, so that whoever is cooking (read: me) isn’t sequestered away.  I want terrific outdoor space, but I want it protected from the elements, so that we can really use our outdoor space as more living space.  Maybe, most importantly, I’ve learned that I like living in a neighborhood.  I like walking my dogs down the road and waving to my neighbors.  I like knowing that I’m not so secluded, so isolated.  I like, no I need, a sense of community that I don’t have here.  Turns out, I’m a pretty social animal.  And I miss the daily interaction of a neighborhood.  To that end, I’ve been looking for our new digs and I have to say, I’m most grateful for all the knowledge I’ve picked up with our gypsy ways.

Tomato Sauce

I know this isn’t going to be a popular thing to say, but I’m not a huge fan of the cook all day tomato sauce and don’t hate me, but I don’t even like meat sauce… I know! Terrible right? However, there’s nothing better than a quick tomato sauce and it’s so versatile! I’m going to illustrate that here, by making a dinner for four and then lunches for my husband for the rest of the week. Ready? Here we go! Hint: It’s cheap too!

Ingredients for quick tomato sauce:

2 T. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3 small onions chopped
3 cloves garlic chopped
2 32 oz. cans crushed tomatoes
1 8 oz. can tomato paste
1 lb. linguini
Dried red pepper flakes (optional – to taste)
freshly grated parm. cheese (we used locatelli)

Additional ingredients to make lunches:

2 lb. mixed pasta
1 32 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 package frozen okra

Heat a medium pan on med. high.  When hot, add the olive oil.  When it “ribbons” add the onion and cook till it’s glossy and translucent.

add the garlic and saute for a minute or two, basically until it smells so good you can’t stand it.   Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste and pepper flakes and let cook for about 10 minutes.  Meanwhile, prepare the linguine according package directions.

Drain the pasta and separate into bowls, spoon some sauce on top, sprinkle with cheese and enjoy!  Add a salad and easily feed a family of four.

Put up another pot of salted water to boil, add the other can of tomatoes to the sauce and add prepare the mixed pasta according to directions.  You can use whatever you like, but my husband found DeCicco pasta misto for very cheap, so we used that.  2 minutes before time’s up, add the frozen okra.  Cook till done and drain.

Transfer to a large bowl and pour the sauce over the pasta and okra.  Combine.  Let cool and transfer to storage containers.

Some of My (Current) Favorite PlugIns

I’ve been having an awful lot of fun this week setting up a couple of blogs for clients, friends and family. Of course I’m always tweaking this one, as I’m sure you may have noticed, but it’s always interesting to start with a blank canvas and build according to the writer’s unique needs and desires. I thought I’d share with you some of the things that I found, some great old stand-bys, and where and how to implement them.  We’re WordPress Centric ’round here, so if that’s not your flavor, you might want to skip this.

First I thought that I would try the plug in that’s gotten so much buzz lately; the Google Analyticator.  I came to Google Analytics a little late in the game as I’ve been using Sitemeter for so long that I didn’t really see the need to change.  Wrong. Google Analytics is so much more powerful with so many different ways of looking at your traffic and your readers.  The Analyticator makes it very easy to install your code to each page, but there are also some other features making it really useful, like putting the code in your footer with the click of a button for faster load times, tracking your adsense information etc.  Useful stuff!

404 Notifier: A great one for anyone, but especially if you’ve had your site for a long time and there have been several incarnations of it, there are most definitely old links to pages that no longer exist from other blogs, forums, etc. With 404 Notifier, every time someone gets a 404 error from your site, you’re notified (by email or RSS feed) of the page they were looking for and you can then either modify your 404 page to send the visitor elsewhere in your site or simply create another file of that name.  Very cool.

Blog Icons might be my favorite one this week – because I’m insane for customized icons.  This one lets you easily add your customized Apple iPod Touch / iPhone icon,  favicon and  feed image to your blog. Go ahead and look, take your iphone and visit colormepink.com – click on the “+” and choose “Add to Home Screen”.  Now you have my pretty butterfly icon right there, easy access!

Post Ideas: This is great. Instead of the 300 drafts I would sometimes wind up with, Post Ideas keeps your ideas, target tags and links you want to reference.  When you’re ready to write the actual post, click “Write This” and it converts your idea into a New Post and deletes it from Post Ideas.  I added a link to this page of my admin panel on my Iphone as well, so I can jot this information down when I’m out of the house. Note: This is compatible with WP 2.7.1 the link is under “Tools” instead of “Manage”.

The last one I’ll talk about today is Podcasting, another one by the developer behind Google Analyticator. Of course you can use it for podcasting, but I needed a way to take a client’s audio file from their commercial and add it to their website for easy listening.  This was a simple, elegant way to do it.  The best part is, it was so easy to teach the client how to do this for themselves. Yay!

I can’t say enough about WordPress and the community of talented developers working on a never ending stream of great plugins and themes.

Fast Food Chain Closings in Ocala

An article in Ocala’s Star Banner this morning, talks about two recent fast food chain locations closing in the the past week. The article blames the economic climate as the main factor for the store closings, but I beg to differ.  While I’m not exactly their target customer, I am not above a quick drive through meal once or twice a month.  If we’re being honest, I quite enjoy a Big Mac now and again.  Also, I’m very big on supporting our local economy and entrepreneurs.  I visited each of these restaurants a total number of once and I’m here to tell you it wasn’t the economy that shut them down.

The first of these to open and the first to close was Whatabuger, a franchise that I was unfamiliar with when it opened here in Ocala and I found myself, one early afternoon, on my way to a homeschool playdate, running late and without the bag lunch that we were supposed to bring.  Whattaburger was not far out of our way, so I decided we’d give it a shot. We ordered two Whataburger meals and one Whataburger Jr. Meal, each came with fries and a soda.  I utilized the drive through option and the woman who waited on us was so rude and nasty that if I wasn’t in such a hurry I would have stopped in and complained to the manager.  The store was not at all busy, as far as I could see there was no one in the dining room and there was only one car in front of us at the drive through, yet we still had to pull over and wait about 15 minutes for our order.  The woman who brought it out wasn’t exactly friendly. In retrospect, I actually did have time to complain, but I didn’t and  I pulled away, now very late for our commitment and didn’t look at the sandwiches till we got there.  The sandwiches were so poorly constructed that they wouldn’t stay together and there was so much mayonnaise on the bun that we had to borrow a knife to scrape it off.  It seemed that they didn’t even try to stack the sandwich properly, you’d almost think that they had to actually try to make this so bad.  I threw mine out and if you knew how much I hate waste, you’d know it must have been really bad.  I never went there again.

Backyard Burger was a much anticipated opening – they claim that their burgers are as good as if you grilled them yourself and while I didn’t think they would be quite that good, I was hoping for a little more sophisticated alternative to the McDonalds/Burger King route. Once again, running late, I didn’t have time for lunch if I was going to get my children to guitar lessons on time.  I raced down Easy Street, dropped the kids off and thought I’d grab a burger.  I pulled into Back Yard Burger, where I was the only customer.  I ordered the Mushroom Swiss burger (one of my favorites, usually) and the seasoned fries.  The women at the window, while not rude like our friend at Whataburger, certainly wasn’t friendly.  You know what?  We all have to do our jobs, right?  And if you’re taking my money, smile and say thank you.  She didn’t.  The burger, while more edible than the one above, seemed to have been quick grilled and then put in an oven to finish.  The meat had that gray tinge that you get if you don’t sear beef before roasting it.  The fries were soggy and cold and needless to say, I never went there again either.

Please know that I’m not taking these closings lightly, people are out of work because of them and I completely empathize.  Especially in a slow down economy, if you’re going to be in business, make sure your employees are treating your customers well, thanking us as they take our money and being polite and friendly.  Make sure that your product is fresh and hot and make sure that your customers don’t feel like they’ve been fleeced when they leave your establishment.

Let’s not whine about how we didn’t have time to build a following before the recession, let’s try to make ourselves stand out in a sea of mediocrity.  There are businesses that are still making money in this economy and especially if you provide a lower cost meal alternative for families that can’t really afford to go to a sit down restaurant at this point in time, you’re in a good position to make some money.
