So last week didn’t go exactly as planned.  We wound up having pizza for dinner on Tuesday because we were out Christmas shopping all day and I was exhausted from it, so the Mahi got moved to this week.  DiGiorno pizza was BOGO at Publix, so that’s what we had. Then we were invited to a friend’s house on Christmas Eve, so I didn’t cook then, either.  Also, turkey was on sale, Jim bought one and decided he wanted that for Christmas – unfortunately, he though I took it out of the freezer and I thought he took it out of the freezer and no one had, in fact taken it out of the freezer.  So.  Christmas day we noshed.  To top it off, Jim’s employer gave all the employees a holiday box, with a ham, a turkey and all the trimming (including a 1/4 bushel of the most delicious oranges) – so Boxing Day we had a ham that Jim cooked. Not exactly the week I’d planned, but hey, I’m flexible and it is the holidays… we’ll get back on track in January.

So this week, there are a couple of meals that were supposed to be cooked last week

Monday – Tomato Soup with Salad
Tuesday – Mahi with sesame balsamic
Wednesday – linguini with tomato sauce and salad
Thursday – London Broil and brussels sprouts (I had an idea for the brussels sprouts, if it’s good I’ll post it)
Friday – Roasted Shrimp with Black eyed peas and collard greens and a bottle of Veuve Cliquot that I’ve been saving. I really want some oysters, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen.  We’ll see.
Saturday – Tuna Salad Platters
Sunday – Roasted chicken breast with Saffron rice and peas and salad

Let’s see how much of this I actually stick to… It’s very hard with the holidays and my knee issue.  It’s definitely healing, but it’s taking too long.  Thanks for asking.

Gifts

December 22. Three more days.  72 hours to get everything bought, wrapped, cooked, cleaned, assembled, baked, frosted, decorated, stuffed, and delivered. The week before Christmas is always crazy, no matter what I say on Thanksgiving; “this year it’s going to be different”, “I think we can forgo presents this year”, and the ever popular, “we should just skip it”.  Yeah, never happens.

My children are old enough to know and realize that it’s been a tough year and they have been very good about mommy’s grinchability this year, but as we got closer, I realized that I couldn’t ignore Christmas and that even if we just got a few simple gifts, and had a nice day off together it was important to acknowledge the holiday.  So, we got out the tree, which Haley decorated and we put up the rest of the decorations and got a few gifts, which have all arrived and I guess I might actually get around to wrapping them.  We’re not doing a big meal, we nosh on Christmas Eve and we were going to have stuffed shells on Christmas day, but then my husband started defrosting the turkey that we had in the freezer, so … I don’t know.

I’ve been thinking though, about the gifts that I wish I could give my children, those intangibles that I wish I had known, that I wish they would learn, but that I know they probably won’t understand until much later. Here they are in no particular order.  Please add any that you think I left out if the spirit moves you.

  • Tomorrow is another day.
If you don’t get to play that video game or talk to that friend, or reach that level today, tomorrow is another shot.  I know we live in a society that demands instant gratification, but sometimes the delay has purpose.  It may be that you’ll understand things on a different level, or that you aren’t quite ready for that thing that you can’t bear to be without, but I promise, tomorrow is another chance to catch that brass ring.
  • Hard work sometimes really is its own reward.
There really isn’t anything more rewarding than knowing that you’ve completed something really well, especially if you had a hard time doing it.  Perseverance and persistence are wonderful traits to have and will get you so much farther than you can even imagine.
  • Lying to get out of something isn’t worth it.
You almost always get caught and even if you don’t, you know that you cheated.  As you get older this will bother you more and more.  If you just can’t, or won’t do something, face the music and explain your position.  It may not be popular and it may not be easy, but in the long run you’ll never be sorry that you took the high road.
  • If someone demands that you respect their positions, beliefs and practices and then refuses to accept yours, they do not care for you.
They may like the idea of you but in the end, don’t accept you for who you are and expect you to conform for them.  Run as fast and as far away as you can from these people.  By the same token…
  • True friends will tell you the good and the bad…
    but they’ll do it gently.
  • Surround yourself with people who will celebrate your victories with you…
and will be there for you to lean on when you’re defeated.
  • Be that kind of friend to others.

Menu Plan Monday Dec. 20, 2010

Hi! If you’re visiting for the first time, welcome! For the regulars, a little explanation…
There’s a great meme called Menu Plan Monday and since I plan my menus weekly anyway, I thought it would be fun to link up with it. If I give someone some inspiration along the way, all the better!

mealplanm 1 Menu Plan Monday Dec. 20, 2010

I love Ever Note for this, I can create my menu, clip recipes or ideas that I want to try and with one click it saves the link, the page, the graphics, everything.  That way I can give credit when I try someone else’s recipe without driving myself crazy trying to find the information.  I can sync my laptop, iPhone and iPad so that I have access to my plan when ever I need it and they even have toggle boxes that feed my “check it off my list” obsession.  There’s a free version that I find to be plenty for me, but they also have a premium version…

Ok, now for the menu.  I’m still recovering from my unfortunate ice skating across the kitchen floor debacle, so we’re using simpler recipes this week and we’re doing pasta way more than I usually do in a week, which I really don’t like to do but it’s what I have and the kids can help.

Monday: Penne with Arugula, Goat Cheese and Grape Tomatoes

Tuesday: Sesame Crusted Tuna with a Soy Balsamic Reduction (Jim’s home – he can help)

Wednesday: Roasted Chicken Breast and Green Beans and Potatoes

Thursday: Greek Pasta Salad

Friday (Christmas Eve): We don’t really eat a meal on Christmas Eve – we nosh.  Shrimp cocktail, cheeses, crackers, crudite, maybe some grilled sliced steak.  We decide the day before – crazy, but it works for us.

Saturday (Christmas Day): I think we’re going to repeat last years dinner cause it was so good.  Stuffed Shells, Garlic Bread and Caesar Salad

Sunday: Tomato Soup and a salad – I think we’ll skip the pasta though, we’ll probably still be full from Christmas!

Blogger Appreciation Day, November ’10

bloggerappreciationbanner thumb 300x77 Blogger Appreciation Day, November 10

So, I came across this post where Kelli acknowledges the blogs and small business sites sending her the most traffic on a monthly basis.  I was immediately hooked.  I’m a stats junkie and I love “share the love” stuff so this was so right up my alley that I decided to jump on the bandwagon. Basically what we’re doing here is looking at our analytics to determine where most of our traffic is coming from and sharing links to those sites as a small thank you.  It’s normally done at the beginning of the month, for the previous month but since I just found it, I wanted to participate immediately.  These are stats from November.

I use Google Analytics for this, it’s free and it’s quite powerful.  I’ve had a sitemeter account for like 100 years, but I downgraded to the free version after discovering Google.  You can also use the raw data from your server if you have a self hosted site, but Google really does the best job as far as I’m concerned.

Ok, so go read Kelli’s post for full directions as she explained it very well, so there’s no sense in me trying to reinvent that particular wheel.

googleanalyticdec Blogger Appreciation Day, November 10

I always do well with search engine traffic, but it’s really just people searching for recipes and doesn’t usually convert to regular readers (there are exceptions, but for the most part they’re just looking for something specific and then they’re gone).  So what I need to focus more on are the referring sites. I’m very good about visiting and commenting if someone comments here, but what I’ve started working on is being proactive and finding great blogs to read and leaving compelling comments that might make someone want to pay me a visit.  Using sites like The SITS Girls and Blog Frog are great ways to get exposure and discover other bloggers with interesting ideas and articles.  There are so many great people blogging and sharing experiences and ideas that there is truly no limit to how many people you can make connections with.

Ok, on to the referrers!

  1. Stella’s Modern Pantry (my favorite local business) sent 40 visitors
  2. Daisy’s Petals sent 24
  3. HomeSchool Diner sent 13
  4. Pink Cricut sent 9
  5. The Abbot Family Blog sent 4
  6. C & C Marriage Factory sent 3
  7. Dream-Link (dot) Net sent 3
  8. Coral Orchid sent 2
  9. Crunchy Betty sent 2
  10. Mommy Wants Vodka sent 2

So.  I know that I need to cultivate some new readers!  Right?  An easy way to do that is memes – and although I don’t relate to a lot of them and I just can’t be authentic if I don’t relate – there are a few that I know of that I do relate to and I’m going to try participating in them as well as the community sites.

I’ll be doing this again, it was very enlightening.

Riding a Mile in Someone Else’s Scooter

2607495785 97ba8a81fa Riding a Mile in Someone Elses ScooterSo you know that I injured my knee last week, right? And you’re also aware that Christmas is like a week away right?  And further, you know that I’m the worst kind of “wait till the last minute” person when it comes to the holidays, right? Ok.  So yesterday was Jim’s day off and we needed to go food shopping really bad.  You know, like, “Mom, I can’t eat Ramen for breakfast. Again.”  Yeah, like that. Worse, I was out of wine.  I knew that I had to figure out how to do this and there is no way that I could send Jim to Publix by himself, with a list this big and all my coupons.  He’d come home with all the wrong brands (control much, Christine?) and things that weren’t on the list, the he “saw and thought you might want”.  No.  I sent him to the store the other night for Seltzer and cat food and he spent $85.00.  I knew that I had to be there.

I can walk around the house, but I really didn’t think that walking around the market was a good idea, so I decided that I would use one of those scooter things.  Jim and I got into the car, drove over to Publix and Jim dropped me off at the door and went to park the car.  Having never driven one before, I was a little nervous and I really didn’t know the scooter choice etiquette at Publix, but clearly there’s a hierarchy.  Am I allowed to unplug them myself?  Do I need employee assistance?  How do I know if there’s enough of a charge to get me through my shopping list?  The questions were endless, but then Jim came in and just took over which I was sort of grateful for – it’s not usually my preference, but my leg hurt and I really didn’t know what to do.  So he picked one out, told me to sit down, which I did. I turned it on and there was a power gauge reading full, so I was set. I wasn’t worried about driving it at all, hell, I used to drive a forklift, so I just pushed the lever and started to move forward.  Just then, a couple walked right in front of me, completely cutting me off.  They didn’t even notice.  I stopped short, which jarred my knee and sent a sharp pain right up my leg. I said something about carelesness, but these two had absolutely no idea that I was even there.

I decided to get over it and move forward (ha! no pun intended).  I turned into the store from the lobby and I was surprised at how quick the scooter actually was.  I was zooming through the deli, on over to produce and there were quite a few people over by the lettuce.  I sort of parked the scooter at the end of the refrigerator case and waited for it to thin out a little bit.  I wasn’t blocking any walkways, I made sure that I wasn’t in anyone’s way and that I wasn’t blocking any items that someone might need to reach.  Person after person walked in front of me, even when a spot in front of the arugula opened and I was clearly headed for it, someone stepped right in front of me.  I finally was able to get the arugula after I got a little more aggressive about jockeying for position and again, moved on.

In the canned goods aisle, there were two people, me and a women in her mid 50s, fairly well dressed in a holiday sweater set, hair done, makeup, very well put together.  I was going one way, and she the other.  Motoring up towards the end of the aisle, this woman stepped in front of the scooter, barely giving me time to stop, picked up a can, put it back, picked up another, put it back, picked up two, straightened, turned, turned back and put them back.  At that point, I said “Excuse me, please.”  She stepped back enough to let me pass, but never even glanced at me.  So much for her holiday outfit.  Merry Freakin’ Christmas.

There were some people who were very nice, who apologized when they realized they had cut me off, or bumped into me, but there were far too many people who were rude and inconsiderate and it really upset me.  I couldn’t help but think of the people who live their lives trying to get around in scooters or with walkers, canes and wheel chairs.  This is a temporary injury for me and next week, I’ll be able to knock those rude assholes down, but not everyone is so lucky.  I’m pretty observant and I always offer help when I see someone struggling, give the right of way to someone not as ambulatory as I am, but I’ll be even more aware of it now and to the lady in the Christmas sweater… I can’t wait to “run into” you again.
