Nikon P90 and Eye Fi

Last year I bought myself a Sony DSC H9 and I loved that camera. Unfortunately Sony is so proprietary that they make it hard to be loyal to them. I couldn’t get lenses or filters unless they were Sony brand and no one sells the Sony accessories except for Sony. The nearest Sony Style store is about 100 miles from my house and these are the kind of items that I want to see in person and hold in my hand before purchasing. I was annoyed from almost the very beginning, but I still loved the pictures that this camera takes. I trudged along with no new lenses or filters, and I was still relatively happy, but then the Eye-Fi card came out and the entire game changed.
Eye Fi is a wifi enabled memory card, allowing you to upload pictures directly from your camera as long as you can connect to a wireless network or a hotspot. I was all over this! We love to go to community activities and events and I always bring my camera. The thought of being able to upload those pictures to Flickr or Facebook, or to check in with Whrrl with beautiful photos from my camera rather than from my phone was more than I could bear. I immediately checked my camera’s compatibility and was crushed when I realized the Eye Fi is only available for SD cards. Of course the Sony cameras use Sony’s Memory Stick Pro Duo (or whatever they’re called) cards and therefore wouldn’t work.
Of course you see where we’re heading here, right? However, I couldn’t possibly manage to justify the cost of a new, comparable camera that used the proper memory card, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the Eye Fi, either. I was lamenting my dilemma to my husband when he suggested that I get a new camera, he’d take the old one and we’d all be happy! Yay!
After much, very careful deliberation, I decided on the Nikon Cool Pix D90

Pretty, isn’t it? I have to tell you that the Sony was easier to manipulate, I’m still getting used to this one. But I have a feeling it’s going to make me a better photographer. It’s all worth it though as I am completely and utterly in love with the Eye Fi.

This thing is one of the coolest little bits of technology ever! At first every picture I took was uploaded to the accounts that I set up. Then I read the directions and realized that I could be more discriminate about what gets uploaded and what doesn’t. Simply set the photographs that you want uploaded to “protected” and whoosh! Away they go. (I really should learn to read directions before attempting to use a new toy).
I’m so very happy with my new toys and look forward to oversharing my life with the whole wide world!

Christine, I would love to see this memory card in action. It sounds so cool and I’m sure you could get Hubby to help you put together a demo. btw – Hubby sounds like he’s pretty cool too!
Happy picture taking.
