Nikon P90 and Eye Fi

Last year I bought myself a Sony DSC H9 and I loved that camera. Unfortunately Sony is so proprietary that they make it hard to be loyal to them. I couldn’t get lenses or filters unless they were Sony brand and no one sells the Sony accessories except for Sony. The nearest Sony Style store is about 100 miles from my house and these are the kind of items that I want to see in person and hold in my hand before purchasing. I was annoyed from almost the very beginning, but I still loved the pictures that this camera takes. I trudged along with no new lenses or filters, and I was still relatively happy, but then the Eye-Fi card came out and the entire game changed.

Eye Fi is a wifi enabled memory card, allowing you to upload pictures directly from your camera as long as you can connect to a wireless network or a hotspot.  I was all over this!  We love to go to community activities and events and I always bring my camera.  The thought of being able to upload those pictures to Flickr or Facebook, or to check in with Whrrl with beautiful photos from my camera rather than from my phone was more than I could bear.  I immediately checked my camera’s compatibility and was crushed when I realized the Eye Fi is only available for SD cards.  Of course the Sony cameras use Sony’s Memory Stick Pro Duo (or whatever they’re called) cards and therefore wouldn’t work.

Of course you see where we’re heading here, right?  However,  I couldn’t possibly manage to justify the cost of a new, comparable camera that used the proper memory card, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the Eye Fi, either.  I was lamenting my dilemma to my husband when he suggested that I get a new camera, he’d take the old one and we’d all be happy!  Yay!

After much, very careful deliberation, I decided on the Nikon Cool Pix D90

Pretty, isn’t it?  I have to tell you that the Sony was easier to manipulate,  I’m still getting used to this one.  But I have a feeling it’s going to make me a better photographer.  It’s all worth it though as I am completely and utterly in love with the Eye Fi.

This thing is one of the coolest little bits of technology ever!  At first every picture I took was uploaded to the accounts that I set up. Then I read the directions and realized that I could be more discriminate about what gets uploaded and what doesn’t.  Simply set the photographs that you want uploaded to “protected” and whoosh!  Away they go. (I really should learn to read directions before attempting to use a new toy).

I’m so very happy with my new toys and look forward to oversharing my life with the whole wide world!

Easy Straight Hair Straightener

A little background: I’m constantly on the look out for products that will smooth my unbelievably thick, coarse, curly, frizzy hair.  The fact that I live in Florida doesn’t help as the humidity really makes it so much worse.  When I straighten my hair I have to deep condition it, then blow it straight, then use a flat iron.  It takes forever and my hair still isn’t smooth and shiny as the texture just won’t allow it to be smooth and straight and shiny all at once.  Even when I let it curl I have to use 4 different products to keep the frizz somewhat manageable.

So, when  I was in Ulta the other day, a product caught my eye and I just had to buy it. It’s called Easy Straight and it promised straight hair for seven days for $14.99.  Too good to be true?  Maybe, but I was willing to give it a shot. I bought the product and brought it home and it sat in my bathroom closet for almost two weeks before I had the nerve and was in the mood to give this a whirl.

The instructions were pretty straightforward; start with clean, lightly conditioned, 80% dry hair.  There are three steps.  The first step is  the treatment which you put all over your head and leave on for 10-30 minutes dependent upon how processed your hair is.  My hair is colored, one process, so the instructions told me to leave it on for 20 minutes, coming it through and then coming through a couple of more times in order to keep it straight.  At the end of the processing time, you rinse with warm water and towel dry.  Again, comb through to get the tangles out and apply step two which is a “sealer”.  You comb it through and then comb three or four more times rinsing it out with warm water after 7 minutes.  Again towel dry and then use step three which is a leave in conditioner.  Comb it through and then either air dry (brushing it straight occasionally) or blow dry straight.

First of all, this was a mess! There was solution and gel and whatever all over the place, and I’m very glad that I removed the rugs from my bathroom before attempting this because it was everywhere. Also, it smells bad, but it’s a chemical process, so that’s to be expected.  I combed it straight and cleaned the bathroom and then combed it straight again.  At this point I decided to visit the website listed on the back of the box.  Imagine my surprise when I see that it’s a keyword domain, you know, one of those domains that is only a depository for link ads?  Yeah.  Fail.  I started to get a little bit nervous so I google the “stylist” whose name is all over the product; Haime Munoz and find his website.  Apparently he has a salon in NY and is a self proclaimed “straightening expert”.  There is a short paragraph about the “Easy Straight” straightening product, with a link to the product site which is (surprise!) that same keyword domain, easystraight.com – Fail #2.  Who’s his web person? So then I just start looking for other people who have reviewed the product and oh. my. god.  I start to panic. (See her and her and her)  By that time I’m in a stone panic and I decide to go into the bathroom and blow dry my hair straight, cause if it’s going to fall out in clumps I’d like to watch it happen (I don’t have enough stress in my life, right?).  Anyway, it didn’t melt and it didn’t fall out, but neither is it straight and shiny.  It is slightly less frizzy, but only slightly and I don’t think I’ll be doing this again.

What would you think if I took up a collection for some Keratin treatments? icon wink Easy Straight Hair Straightener

Pumpkin Soup

It has been a rather decadent holiday season around here.  I think the rough year that was 2009 was the catalyst for a lot of comfort food, diet breaking and alcohol consumption this past month.  I know it was around here.  So, as we start the new year I’m trying to feed my family (and myself) a little bit healthier, a little bit diet consciously.  With that in mind, today I decided to try pumpkin soup.  Not having ever eaten it before, I really didn’t know what I was going for.  I read a ton of pumpkin soup recipes, from the extremely vegan, health conscious, to one that seemed conspicuously like pumpkin cheesecake.  I opted to try mostly healthy, with a small splash of decadent.  Here’s what I did:

2 cans of pumpkin (not filling people, just pumpkin – we all know the difference right?) :wassat:
1 med. onion chopped
2 cloves garlic minced
red pepper flakes (when all was said and done, I used three healthy pinches – use to taste)
1/8 t. cayenne pepper (approximate – again to taste)
1/2 t. ginger
1/2 t. cinnamon
3 T. extra virgin olive oil
32 oz. vegetable broth
1/4 t. salt
1/2 t. black pepper (I did about 7 grinds)
Half and Half or cream

Heat the oil on medium high in a heavy bottomed, large pot.  Add the onion and garlic and saute until glossy and slightly softened. Add the cayenne, ginger, cinnamon and the red pepper flake and saute for a minute or two.  Add the pumpkin and stir.

When the onion, garlic, spices and pumpkin are combined add the vegetable broth and stir until it’s a uniform consistency.  Bring it to a boil then turn it down and let it simmer, uncovered for 30 minutes.

At this point, taste it and adjust the seasonings to your liking.  Using an immersion blender (or your blender, but be careful and do it in small batches), puree the soup. Raise the heat and bring to the temperature you’d like (I like it warm, but not too hot), ladle into a bowl and add about a teaspoon of cream.  Stir and eat.

This was really good.  More subtle than a lot of the things I usually make, but the spice builds as you eat it and I found it to be very satisfying.  My son thought it was OK, my daughter ate three bowls and wants me to make it again.
