Madly In Love With Me™ and necklace giveaway!

SFevent bnr 300x125 Madly In Love With Me!

Last week the whole family was going out for my daughter’s birthday.  I took a shower, did my hair with no less than four products, a blow dryer and two brushes; then I carefully applied my makeup.  I decided on a pair of black pants, a black decorated tank with a pearl neckline and a gauzy white shirt/jacket.  I carefully chose a pair of coin, freshwater pearl, dangle earrings that were the exact color of the pearls on the tank.  I checked myself in the mirror and as I put on my shoes, my husband said, “You look nice.”  Instead of saying thank you, I made a face and said, “The mirror in my room tells me that I’m cute, but some reflection at some point today will tell me otherwise.”  Both my son and daughter rolled their eyes and my husband shook his head.  I realized that I say things like this all the time and that I say it in front of my son and daughter. As much as I pay lip service to Girl Power and healthy self-esteem, it was crystal clear to me in that moment that the message I’m sending to my children is not one of empowerment, but one of self loathing.

Not exactly my proudest mommy moment.

The very next morning I received an email concerning Self Love Day, Christine Arylo’s inspirational idea and I knew I had to participate! No coincidences, right? Anyway, I jumped on over to their site and downloaded the Madly in Love With ME™ kit.

Now I’m challenging you to do it too.

In addition, one lucky reader will receive the beautiful “me” necklace! The one requirement to participate is to download the free ME-Love kit from and leave a comment here telling me:
-    The self-love dare you took and why?
-    The self -love vow you took and why?
-    Both the dare and vows are in the Madly in Love with ME™ kit.

My Self Love Manifesta:

  • I pay  attention to the things that I say to myself,  remembering that I need kindness and gentleness too.
  • I say yes to the things that truly nurture me and no to the things that don’t
  • I spend time with myself, just being present and enjoying my own company
  • I nourish myself with the things that I put into my body and mind
  • I spend time each day strengthening myself with exercise, dance, movement of some sort
  • I always trust my intuition
  • For everything I do for everyone else, I balance it with doing something for myself

Now how about you?

*Disclaimer – I am working with Christine Arylo as part of this blog campaign. I received the necklace in the give away from her to offer to my readers in this giveaway.

iPhone Task Apps Part I

I can’t seem to find exactly what I’m looking for in an iPhone app.  I’d like a list maker that I can use online, on my computer and on my phone, completely syncing them.  I’d like to be able to import part of a list into another list.  I’d love it if all my lists were able to find coupons that were relevant to my lists at local stores.  Not all of my lists are shopping lists, but some of them are and I’d like to have a way to differentiate between the two, maybe by keeping them in different categories. I’d also love some social functions so that I can share lists with people in my network if we’re planning a pot luck party, or to just send some errands to my husband if we’re both out taking care of things. I’ve been desperately trying to find one app the does it all, but it’s eluded me so far.

A while back I reviewed MiMeals, which I still feel is a great app and a huge step in the right direction, but I can’t create online, or on my computer and sync and it doesn’t have any coupon or social features.  I love that I can import a meal’s ingredients into my shopping list, but there’s only one list and I have to input everything on the phone.  I have been using MiMeals in conjunction with Evernote which has the syncing capabilites, as well as bookmarking, multiple lists, and categorizing, but there’s still no sharing/social features, and no coupons.

I started to do some searching, and thought I had found a couple of prospects.  Make It At Home (URL Removed, dead link) was one, but it turned out to be WalMart specific and when I went to the site in late January, they hadn’t updated it since the holidays.  I hate to think about how much money they spent on this and then just allowed it to languish into uselessness.  I don’t love Walmart,  so it probably wouldn’t have been a good fit for me anyway.

Next I found Yada Home.  I signed up for the free service and received an email that was an image file.  On the graphic were links to different parts of the site, but since it was a graphic, I couldn’t copy and paste and the entire image was linked to their paid subscription page, which according to the email was on special for $4.99 per year, yet when I clicked the link, the charge was $9.99 a year (still inexpensive, but I wanted to know if it was worth it).  I sent them the following email:

Hi! I signed up for Yadahome today and I received an email saying that I had a 7 day free trial to Turbo.  Also, it had a supposed link to an upgrade for $4.99, but when I click it – the charge is $9.99.  I’d like to review this app and service, but I can’t figure out the difference between free and turbo and the FAQ doesn’t’ really help.  Also, in the email, since it’s sent as a graphic, you can’t copy and paste the link to the terms and you can’t click on it because the whole graphic takes you to the upgrade page.  I hope to explore this further, thanks for your attention.

They responded:

Hi Christine.

Thank you for writing and for your interest in our service.

We recently returned pricing to $9.99/user/year. We will review our email text to make sure the pricing information has been updated.

We’re in the process of preparing a comparison page to help users decide between the free and paid offer, but the primary differences are:
1) The Turbo service allows users to create multiple grocery lists and to do lists, whereas the free version allows for a single generic grocery list and a single to do list.
2) The Turbo service allows you to access and sync from the iPhone and soon our web app, which will make access from many pther SmartPhones possible.
3) The Turbo service lets you share grocery lists and to do lists with others in your network.

The terms and privacy are available at the following link on the website:

http://www.yadahome.com/terms.php

http://www.yadahome.com/privacy.php

We continue to refine our product and are looking forward to introducing new features that will strengthen our offering and simplifying the overall user experience.

Thanks again,
YadaHome.com, LLC

If this were my company, I might have apologized for the mistake and offered the prospective client (who is obviously pretty vocal), the $4.99 rate.  They didn’t do either and it felt a little “bait and switchy” to me, so I deleted that app too. Also, in order to get “upgrades”, you had to invite friends to the community.  I know lots of communities that rely on word of mouth, but that felt a little too “spammy” to me. Maybe I’m jumping the gun and maybe they weren’t exactly ready for launch, but I wasn’t feeling so great about this one.

It did however, have some of the social functions I was looking for; I was able to share recipes, but I couldn’t import ingredients from those recipes into my shopping list.  The dashboard is very cute with a refrigerator/kitchen interface and if they had the import and coupon functions, I might have reconsidered.

I’m still on the lookout and I’m hopeful I’ll find the perfect app.  It doesn’t have to be free, but I have to feel that it’s worth the cost of admission and a free trial would be very helpful. I will continue to explore and download and try them out.  What are you using? Can you recommend something?

Steamed Broccoli with Garlic and Lemon

A couple of months ago, we had some friends over.  I made a simple meal of grilled chicken with broccoli sauteed in garlic with lemon.  Everyone oohed and aahed about the broccoli and even though it’s one of my favorites, I was really surprised that they hadn’t ever had it prepared this way.  I started to think about that and thought I’d share it here because when you really don’t know what to make, this is easier than anything in the world and good enough for company.

Here’s what I do:

4 heads of broccoli
Lots of chopped garlic (6-8 cloves)
1 lemon
Olive Oil
Salt

Clean and trim the broccoli, reserve the stalks for another use, you really just want the florets for this. Steam the broccoli lightly (we like it really crisp, just barely steamed and bright green, you should do it however you like).  Drain the broccoli, set aside, carefully wipe the pan with a towel so that there isn’t a lot of excess water and put it back on the burner.  Set the burner to Med/High – closer to med, we don’t want the garlic to burn. Pour a couple of glugs of oil into the pan and when it starts to ribbon, add the garlic.

Doesn't that look great?

Let the oil and garlic really simmer and bubble and then add the broccoli back to the pot. Toss really well to coat the broccoli and heat it back up- add more oil if you have to and then pour the broccoli into a serving dish.  Make sure you scrape the pot to get every bit of garlic out.

Cut the lemon in half and slice about 4 very thin slices off for garnish.  Sqeeze the lemons over the broccoli, being careful not to get seeds into the dish.
Garnish with the lemon slices, sprinkle salt over the dish and serve!

Perfect!

Asian Pasta Salad

Have I mentioned I like pasta salad? Have I mentioned that I like to make a lot of it, to feed as many people as might be traipsing through my house at any given time? Have I also mentioned that I like to change it up so that it doesn’t get boring? Yeah, that.
Yesterday I was at Publix and they had beautiful snow peas, I love snow peas and I decided to try to make an Asian inspired pasta salad.

Here’s what I did:

For the salad:
2 boxes of farfalle cooked and rinsed to cool
1/2 lb. of snow peas
1 pkg shelled edamame (rinsed)
2 cucumbers, peeled and chunked
2 large tomatoes, chunked
1 sm. red onion sliced thin
1 can mini corn (rinsed)
1 cans sliced water chestnuts (rinsed)

Put two posts of salted water up to boil. Clean and trim the snow peas if necessary. When the water’s boiling, put the snow peas in for about three minutes, drain and shock them with cold water to stop the cooking. When they’re cool, drain and add to large bowl. Add the rest of the salad ingredients.

For the Dressing:
Ponzu
White Balsamic Vinegar
The juice of one lemon
Extra virgin olive oil
salt and pepper
1/2 t. minced ginger
1/2 t. minced garlic
2 T. (approximately) honey

Use a small jar with a tight fitting lid.  My jar was from a sorbet that wasn’t very good, but the jar has been indispensable!

Pour equal amounts of ponzu and vinegar to the jar(I started with a 1/2 c. each), add lemon juice, salt and pepper, ginger garlic and honey.  Fill the rest of the way with olive oil (to taste) screw the lid on tightly.

Shake well.  Pour over the pasta.  You don’t have to use all  the dressing, just enough for it to be wet.  Toss well.  (I used a rubbermaid container, put the lid on securely and turned it upside down to shake.  Do this at your own risk, I have lost contents of the container on occasion.
