Glee and TPain Apps

These two apps might be the most fun I’ve ever had with my phone.  Auto tuners, harmonies, pre loaded songs, or a capella (your choice). Self indulgent? Definitely. Crazy fun? Yep.

The first one is “Glee” and if you live under a rock, you might not have heard about Fox’s smash show – the most addictive show on TV as far as I’m concerned (you know, since Lost is over), and the show that has most successfully used Social Networking to increase it’s popularity by creating terrific buzz via Facebook and Twitter.  Anyway, I digress.  Glee is s Smule app available for .99 in the app store.  It comes with a few songs to get you started, and an ever growing catelogue of new songs, available for .99 a piece, although they’re playing with a new idea about unlocking songs as you reach different goals.  You can also use your iTunes library, but you can’t share those (more about sharing in a bit).

Plug in your headphones and start your song and sing along, choose whether you use Auto Pitch, or Auto Harmony, or both, or neither.  It does seem to sound better if you use a “smaller” voice rather than belting your songs out, but maybe it’s just the songs I’ve chosen.

When you’ve got something you like, you can share it on Facebook, Twitter, via a link, or you can broadcast it so that other Gleeks, all over the world can listen in, weigh in on your performance, or add their voice to your song.  Rate each others performances to earn “gleeks” which unlock a new song when you earn enough (currently it’s 50 and there’s only one song to unlock, but I’ve got hope for more!)

As my gift to you, here’s  my version of True Colors for you to make fun of as you see fit.

And if you’re not a show choir/musical theatre sort, there’s a similar app with a Hip Hop slant. I am TPain available for $2.99 with more content available for purchase.

Very similar features, this one came out first, but I’m sure no one here wants to hear me rap, so I’ll spare you.  Another app that’s great fun though, this one operates the same way.  Freestyle, beats, additional songs for purchase, and the ability to share it worth the world.

I think my favorite part of this one, is recording messages for my kids with the Auto Tuner – you know things like “did you finish your math? Well you should, cause I’m on a boat!” I think I’m very funny, don’t you?

I received no compensation for this post, I just love these apps.

Hakuna Frittatta and Teflon Giveaway!

We have a winner!!!!  Julie from Mid Life Mama! Congratulations Julie!  I’ll be contacting you for your shipping info this week!  I know you’ll love your pan!

The lovely people at Teflon sent me a present.  Well, two actually, one for me and one for you!  It’s a lovely Tramontina, Teflon Platinum Nonstick Pan with a removable Silicone grip!

In honor of National Egg Month, I decided to christen the pan with a Frittatta.  A Hakuna Frittatta!

Here’s what I did:

Enough olive oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan
8 eggs
1 yellow pepper chopped
1 orange pepper chopped
leftover roasted broccoli and cauliflower chopped
1 Chipotle in Adobo minced (optional – this is spicy)
Splash of half and half
1 nice pile of shredded cheese (a couple of handfuls)
Roasted potatoes and onions
Salt and pepper to taste

Set the racks in your oven so that there is room on the bottom one for a sheet pan and room on the top one for your frying pan.  Preheat oven to 400 – cut potatoes and onions to bite size.  Place on a lipped sheet pan, salt and pepper liberally.  Toss with olive oil and cook for 40 minutes or until the potatoes start to brown.

When the potatoes seem almost done continue with the frittatta:

Heat the super cool non-stick pan (or any other oven safe non-stick pan) on medium heat and pour a bit of oil in it to coat the bottom.  Add the peppers and saute.

When they start get shiny add the broccoli and cauliflower and chipotle (or whatever you like, onions, dried meat, cured meat, any leftovers from yesterday, whatever you have in the fridge).

Crack the eggs into a mixing bowl, add a healthy splash of half and half (or water, skim milk, cream, whatever your preference), salt and pepper and whisk till blended.

Lower the heat to low and pour the eggs on top of the vegetables.  Cook for a couple of minutes, scraping down the sides and the bottom of the pan with a heat proof spatula.  You want the eggs almost cooked but very wet, sort of liquidy, with bits of cooked eggs in it.  Now you’re going to let this sit and cook for a minute or so to set the bottom.  Use this time to grate the cheese on top.

You could use any cheese – cheddar, Monterrey jack, your favorite blend – really anything would work.  For this one, I’m using a special one… it’s my favorite cheese – Beecher’s No Woman Cheese that I buy from Stella’s Modern Pantry.  It’s an unbelievably delicious treat and I thought it would really make this Fritatta special, with it’s Jamaican Jerk seasoning veined through it -yum!

Anyway, put the pan in the oven and allow to cook for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese gets melty and the eggs set completely.

Carefully remove from oven and allow to cook for a couple of minutes.

Use a heat safe spatula to cut and plate a portion.  I did it on top of a bed of potatoes and onions.  It was delicious.  Hakuna Frittatta indeed.

So now it’s your turn! Leave a comment telling me what you’d like to make in this fabulous pan and I’ll pick a random comment and send you the pan and a collection of egg recipes put together by Teflon in honor of National Egg Month.  Get a second entry by “liking” ColorMePink! on Facebook – leave a separate comment letting me know that you have. Winner will be drawn on June 1st! (my birthday, by the way!)

*Full Disclosure: I was sent two pans at no cost to me, one to keep and one to give away.  My opinions are my own.

When to Let Go

This morning my children and I decided to take a quick swim. We have friends coming over this afternoon, so it couldn’t be too long but the water was so crystal clear and the perfect temperature; not too cold, but still refreshing. The sun was shining and it was already hot at 11AM, so we threw on our suits and hopped in.

After some time, I knew I needed to start getting ready and as I enjoyed my last few minutes in the pool, I looked at my two children and wondered if it would be ok to leave them in the pool, alone, while I took a shower and got dressed. They’re both strong swimmers and they’re 12 and 15 years old. But should I? Would they know what to do in an emergency? Even though I’ve drummed into their heads, “if there’s an emergency, call 911, come get me, if there’s an emergency, call 911, come get me”, but would they remember, God forbid if something did happen, would they have the presence of mind to remember the drill? Twelve and Fifteen…

When I was twelve, younger even – my friends and I went out early in the morning and didn’t come home until dark. We’d stop at someone’s houses for lunch or scrounge together whatever coins we had in our pockets and eat a candy lunch from Bennett’s, the neighborhood luncheonette – sometimes we’d get a sandwich from the deli and split it, or bug Al at Chicken Delight, who happened to rent the apartment in my mother’s house, until he took pity on us and gave us a bucket of chicken. I don’t think any of our parents knew where we were. We were the original latch key kids and all of our parents worked.

On really hot days, when his brothers weren’t using the pool, we went to Rory’s and swam down to the deep end of his pool, chasing coins or whatever was handy, diving off the sides and even jumping off the roof of the garage into the pool. I don’t know how no one noticed this and stopped us, but we survived.

Warm summer nights we played manhunt – from Merrick Rd to Sunrise Highway, two very busy roads and from Oceanside Rd. to 7-11 which was probably just a little less than 1/2 a mile. We played well into the night, running through people’s yards, yelling to each other and we really didn’t get into too much trouble, except from two cranky old neighbors – although thinking back on it, we were very loud and they were probably trying to sleep.

And as I thought about that, I realized that we all survived, we all made it to adulthood, no one died, at least not from the pool or manhunt – and while we probably should have had more supervision, we certainly didn’t need as much as my children get.

I contemplated this for a while and then reminded my children that we don’t roughhouse in the pool, nor dive off the sides and that we needed to respect the water and then I went inside and took a shower, leaving my children in the pool. And you know what? They were just fine.

Flat Bread Pizza

I just discovered a really great product – (this is not a sponsored post) it’s called Tandoori Naan and it’s so delicious and easy you can’t believe it!

I got home yesterday, too late to make the meal I had planned and I knew I had spinach that needed to be used.  I threw this together in no time and it was really, truly delish.

2 packages flat bread (4 pieces)
2 pints grape tomatoes
4 cloves of garlic chopped
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
2 bunches of spinach
half a pint of ricotta
4 handfuls shredded mozzarella, or italian blend, or whatever you like.

Heat a heavy bottomed pan with a lid on med/high heat.  Add the olive oil and when it’s hot, add the garlic.  Let saute a minute or two and then add the cherry tomatoes

Let the tomatoes cook until they start to wrinkle and split and then add one bunch of the spinach.  Lower the heat to med/low, cover, let cook down, add the second bunch of spinach, cover and let cook down again.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, lay out the flat breads on a lipped baking sheet or two.

Spoon the spinach mixture on to the flat breads, going to about a half inch from the sides (some of this will spill over while cooking, which is why we’re using the lipped sheets), spoon the ricotta on top then sprinkle the mozzarella on top of that.

Place in the oven for about 20 minutes, or until the cheese is brown and bubbling.

Allow to cool a bit before cutting into them – that will allow the cheese to be more solid, preventing it from sliding off your “pizza”.  So easy, so delicious.
