Well, here we go again. The temperature was in the 20s last night and will be dipping into the 20s (tonight’s supposed to go down to 22!) all week. Let me make something perfectly clear here. I. hate. the. cold. I was never one of those kids who would anxiously await the first snow day of the year. Well I did love getting the day off from school, but I was the kid sitting inside watching TV, not the one with the sled, running to the park to take my turn on the big hill. I just don’t get it. Why, in the name of all that is holy would I fall into wet, freezing snow… on purpose? I’ve never been skiing either. First of all, I’m pretty clumsy, second of all, there’s almost 100% chance that you’re going to fall down even if you’re graceful. Again, it begs the question, why would you do that on purpose??
Growing up on Long Island, I would just about hibernate from early December to late March – and I moved south as soon as I could. My husband and I were getting married and decided to move to Florida for our honeymoon. We moved blindly, without any plan and while it probably wasn’t the smartest way to do things, we sure did enjoy that first winter. We served homemade sangria outside on Thanksgiving, sitting around in short sleeves and sundresses. It was heaven.
When I got pregnant with my first child, I panicked. How was I going to do this without my family? How could I take care of a baby? We moved back up north and guess what. No one helped. I was alone anyway, taking care of the baby all by myself while Jim worked and I cried all winter long. We spent the next four years trying to get back to Florida and when my second child was six months old, we packed everyone up and moved back down. I don’t regret it. I love living in the South and I love not owning mittens or boots, or even a heavy coat.
For the last couple of years, though – we’ve actually had a winter. Of course it’s not as bad as living in NY – it doesn’t stay cold all day and I never have to go out with a scarf over my face because the cold air hurts my insides when I breathe, but still. I’m not a fan of 20 degree temperatures. Ever. And Florida, if this continues, I’m going to have to break up with you.
I wonder how cold it gets in Costa Rica?

Okay someone living South needs to adopt me, my hubby and our little Maltese, Tinker Lily. I have lived in the Midwest (IL & MO) all my life and I am here to tell you I hate the snow and this week it has been getting down in the teens. Brrrrr! I really want to move South but hubby’s job keeps us here darn it! I hope when he retires we can eventually move. In the meantime I am looking for an adoptive family who will take pity on me
Any takers??

It’s been cold(ish) here (Austin) a couple times, but in general, I keep going, “Ummm, I don’t remember it being 85 F in December…” Ugh.

I had to laugh about your breaking up with Florida! We live on the west coast of WA and it’s been called the banana belt of WA state. We get our snow for a couple of weeks and then we’re in the clear. It’s the 20 degree stuff I hate too! I am grateful we don’t live in previous deep freeze areas like, MI, IN, VA anymore. Shoveling snow was horrible.

@Christine,
That’s what your teenagers do for you! Living in Florida has ‘robbed them’ of that joy. :O)
